When Daniel first reached out to me about planning his dream proposal in Hakone, I could immediately sense how intentional he was about every little detail. Choosing the Perfect Hakone Proposal Location


Daniel was very clear from the start: he didn’t want to propose in front of crowds at the well-known spots like Lake Ashior the Heiwa no Torii Hakone Shrine, even though they are iconic. Instead, he wanted a serene, private, and naturally beautiful backdrop for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.


After considering several places, he chose the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands, located near the scenic Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields. This was a brand-new location for me, so I traveled from Tokyo a few hours early to scout the garden, study the light, and select the most picturesque frames. Among all the possibilities, one spot stood out: lavender flowers blooming in the foreground with lush green hills and golden evening light creating a storybook backdrop.

The Dream Proposal Moment


When Daniel brought Danielle to the garden, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect—golden hour in Hakone, when the sun paints the landscape with warm hues. As they reached the chosen spot, Daniel got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring and asked Danielle to spend forever with him. Her emotional yes was everything a photographer could dream of capturing.


Their outfits couldn’t have been more perfect: Daniel in a mint-green linen button-down and Danielle in a royal blue dress. The colors popped beautifully against the soft glow of the setting sun, with the lavender and hills wrapping the scene in pure magic.

A Romantic Surprise at Their Hakone Ryokan


The fairytale didn’t end there. After the proposal, we returned to their stunning ryokan, where Daniel had prepared yet another surprise for Danielle. Their room was beautifully decorated, champagne was waiting on ice, and the atmosphere was filled with love and joy.


We captured some intimate, love-filled engagement photos inside their traditional Japanese room, highlighting their pure emotions and the coziness of the moment. To finish the evening, we stepped outside to their private onsen—a hot spring bath attached to their room—for some dreamy, romantic shots that perfectly closed out their unforgettable day in Hakone.
